US recalls of products made in China, 2023 to 2026: what the notices show

Sources checked

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) publishes a notice for every consumer product recall it announces. Each notice names the product, the hazard, the remedy and, in most cases, the country of manufacture. For a buyer, the notices are a record of what went wrong with products like theirs.

This site holds the 1,528 notices dated from 5 January 2023 to 8 October 2026 and makes them searchable on the recall search page.

Notices by year

Year All notices Made in China Other origins Origin not stated
2023 324 174 146 4
2024 305 185 119 1
2025 420 301 119 0
2026, to 8 October 479 382 95 2
Total 1,528 1,042 479 7

A notice is counted as made in China when the country of manufacture given in the notice starts with China. Hong Kong and Taiwan are not counted as China.

What the figures do and do not mean

The table counts notices. It does not measure how many unsafe products exist, and it does not give the share of Chinese-made imports that is unsafe: that would need the number of products imported, which is not in this data.

The 2026 row is not a full year.

The figures cover one regulator. The CPSC handles consumer products; food, medicines, vehicles and some other goods are recalled by other US agencies and are not in this data.

No product categories

The CPSC data interface gives a product category for only 81 of the 1,528 notices. This site therefore has no category filter and publishes no counts by category. To find notices for a kind of product, search by keyword — the search looks in the notice title, the product name and the hazard text.

Using notices to write a checklist

Search for your product type and read the hazard text of the notices that come up. The hazard text says what failed, in the regulator's words. Three uses follow.

  1. Add checks. If notices for your kind of product keep naming the same failure, put a check for it in your inspection instructions, or a laboratory test in your test plan.
  2. Classify defects. A fault that has led to a recall belongs in the critical class of your defect list.
  3. Ask the supplier. Ask how the factory prevents the failure described, and what test reports it holds.

An on-site inspection cannot show that a product meets a safety regulation. Many hazards in recall notices — flammability, chemical content, battery failure — are found by laboratory testing, not by looking at a sample in a factory.

Questions

How many CPSC recall notices named China as the country of manufacture?

Of the 1,528 notices dated 5 January 2023 to 8 October 2026, 1,042 give China as the country of manufacture.

Where does the data come from?

From the CPSC's public recall data interface. Each result on the search page links to the notice on cpsc.gov, which is the authoritative text.

Why can I not filter by product category?

The source gives a category for only 81 notices. A keyword search of the product name and hazard text is the reliable way to find notices for a product type.
