The fields in a CPSC recall notice

Sources checked

CPSC's recall data interface returns one record per recall notice, and every record carries the same 22 fields — RecallID, RecallNumber, RecallDate, Description, Title, Products, Hazards, Remedies and others. Some fields are filled in every time, such as RecallDate and Title, while others are rare: the SoldAtLabel field is empty in all 1,528 records, and ProductUPCs is filled in 55 of them. The counts below were counted by this site from CPSC's recall data, covering 1,528 notices dated 5 January 2023 to 8 October 2026.

A field count is a number of notices, not a number of products or injuries, and one notice can fill several of these fields at once.

Fields inside Products and Hazards

The interface also has sub-fields inside Products and Hazards. Products[].Type — the product type — is filled in 81 of 1,528 records, and Hazards[].HazardType is filled in 0 of 1,528 records. So there is no official product category or hazard type in this data to group notices by. Products[].NumberOfUnits is written as text, such as "About 2,650", sometimes with units sold in Canada or Mexico in brackets. Unit figures are not added up here.

Reading a notice for an inspection

The product name, description and hazard text say what to look for. The remedy and the unit figure say what happened to the products, not whether a factory is reliable.
